What is World Hand Hygiene Day?

Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) sponsors World Hand Hygiene Day on May 5th to remind us that Clean Hands Count every day of the year…and in more ways than we think. The WHO aims to catalyze the discussion on the importance of hand hygiene in healthcare and its overall improvement worldwide by bringing people together.



Always wash your hands before:


*Preparing food or eating

*Treating wounds or caring for a sick person.

*Inserting or removing contact lenses

*Always wash your hands after:

*Preparing food

*Using the toilet or changing a diaper

*Touching an animal, animal feed or waste

*Blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing

*Treating wounds or caring for a sick person


Simple steps to wash your hands:


1. Wet your hands with running water — either warm or cold.

2. liquid, bar or powder soap to a cupped hand.

3. Lather well.

4. Rub your hands, palm to palm, vigorously for at least 20 seconds.

5. Remember to scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.

6. Rinse well.

7. Dry your hands with a clean towel.
